For Akintola Fatoyinbo African Education Journalism Award
Entries
are open for the 2005 edition of the Akintola Fatoyinbo African Education
Journalism Award, which recognizes the best articles on education written
by African journalists and published in the African press.
The goals
of the Award are:
*
To
promote coverage of education by the African media;
* To encourage newspapers to print high-quality articles
about education so as to
stimulate
public discussion of this issue throughout Africa; and
* To support the development of a network of African journalists
who specialise in educational matters.
The competition honours six journalists every year. The award-winning
journalists and their editors-in-chief are invited to participate in a
study tour that is organised around seminars on current educational issues
and visits to major media organizations that are partnering the award.
The partners include Le Monde de l’éducation, Le Monde interactif (Le
Monde online), and Radio France Internationale (RFI) in Paris, The Times
Education Supplement (TES) and the BBC in London.
For the 2005 edition, any article produced by an African journalist and
published in a newspaper or magazine or other publications, which may be
daily, weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually can
enter. Articles must be submitted to the Association for the Development
of Education in Africa (ADEA) before April 1, 2005.
An
international jury composed of education specialists and established
journalists will evaluate the articles and then select six. The panel of
judges will be made up of education specialists and journalists who are
well known as authorities in their respective fields and for their
thorough knowledge of Africa. The panel will meet to select the six best
articles (two in English, two in French and two in Portuguese) according
to the following criteria: relevance, objectivity, rigorous analysis,
originality, quality of writing, and value for education.
A
sum of 2,000 euros will also be awarded to the first prize winners, with
1,000 euros going to the winners of second prize. As in preceding
competitions, the six prize-winners as well as the editors-in-chief of the
periodicals in which the articles appeared, will be invited by ADEA to
Paris and London for a study trip during which they will:

education , organized by ADEA in
collaboration with UNESCO's International Institute for Educational
Planning (IIEP);

Supplement (TES) and the BBC in
