Security Forces Shut Radio and TV Stations Days to Elections

On April 11, 2007, three days before elections for state governors and state houses of Assemblies, two sister broadcast stations Link FM and Gotel TV were shut down by the security forces without a warrant.

Eight members of the security forces burst into the studios of Link FM and GTV in Ketu area of Lagos at about 6 p.m. (local time) ordering all staff on duty to vacate the premises and then placing seals over the entrances.

They said they were acting on "an order from above." The studios were still closed the following morning and staff were not allowed to enter.

The two stations began broadcasting just a few weeks before the incident and their director, Stanley Okoye, said he did not know why they had suddenly been closed.
