SSS Arrest, Release Newspaper Bureau Chief

 

On June 1, 2006, Mr. Tony Eluemunor, the Abuja bureau chief of Daily Independent was arrested by men of the State Security Service (SSS) Nigeria’s secret intelligence agency, on the orders of the agency’s Director General, Colonel Kayode Are.

 

He was question for about 20 minutes in connection with a front page news story published by Daily Independent on June 1, 2006 titled “Gusau sacked over contract”. The story alleged that Major General Aliyu Gusau Rtd, the former National Security Adviser, was relieved of his position on May 31, 2006 due to disagreements with President Olusegun Obasanjo over a military contract to purchase military weapons for combating insecurity in the volatile Niger delta region of Nigeria.

 

Tony was released after questioning

 

The newspaper traced the source of the information to the website of an Israeli newspaper, ‘Haarretz’.
