Gunmen Raid newspaper offices

On June 5, 2007, two gunmen burst into the offices of the privately owned daily newspaper, The Punch in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers state in the Niger-delta region asking of the whereabouts of one of the employees.

The two gunmen threatened the staff with their guns and demanded to see an employee who was not in the office at the time. They attempted to kidnap one of the staff, Christian Madueke, whom they met in the office. Christian fled by jumping out of a window when they aimed their guns at him. He sustained serious injuries as he jumped down the newspaper’s offices on the second floor of the building.

The Niger-delta region has been a hotspot of kidnappings, inter ethnic and cult clashes etc.
