FCDA Demolishes Daar Communication’s office complex in Abuja.

On June 14 2007, men of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Abuja demolished part of the multi million naira office complex of Daar Communications PLC, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Ray Power Radio, on the Kpaduma Hills in Asokoro area of Abuja.

The destruction of part of the structures of the privately owned television and radio stations by the Demolition Task Force, an arm of the Demolition Control Department of the FCDA, affected a digital studio, a technical operations office, and a common room for news anchors.

The FCDA claimed the station contravened the FCT planning rules, that it encroached on neighboring property, and also accused the station of using residential premises for commercial purposes.

Daar Communications management however denied the FCDA charges. Ladi Lawal, Managing Director of Dar Communications disclosed that the station altered its building plans in July 2006 with the permission of the FCDA authorities, who then inspected the site on several occasions.

Daar communications has been at the receiving end of several attacks in recent months especially following the failed third term bid of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
