Journalist Beaten Unconscious by Policemen

On May 1, 2007, Dare Folorunso a journalists with the state-owned Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) was beaten by several policemen, including a deputy commissioner in Akure, in the southwestern state of Ondo, at a May Day rally until he fell unconscious.

Folorunso’s ordeal began when, at the entrance to the Akure stadium where the May Day rally held, he was taking photographs of events, an action to which a policeman objected. In spite of his explanation that he is a journalist, the policeman went on to assault him. When Folorunso tried to defended himself, other policemen rallied round their colleague and began beating the journalist.

Reports have it that assistant commissioner of police, Joshua Mumbo, participated in the beating and hit Folorunso several times on the head with a baton.

Other journalists who tried to intervene on behalf of Folorunso were also beaten up.

The police finally stopped the beating when Folorunso, bleeding heavily, lost consciousness. But he was not taken to hospital until much later, after Michael Bodunde, another assistant commissioner of police, and  Alaba Isijola, an Ondo state official, intervened.
