Detain and Release Managing Editor
On November 8, 2006, Mr.
Babafemi Ojudu, Managing Editor of ‘The News’ magazine, based in Lagos
was arrested and detained, on account of the lead story of the
magazine’s 6 November 2006 edition titled: “Ehindero, the failed Police
boss”. He was released on bail on November 9, 2006.
According to Mr. Bayo
Onanuga, the magazine’s Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief, Mr. Ojudu was
initially invited to the Ikeja, Lagos, Police Officers’ mess for a
discussion by the Lagos State Police Commissioner (CP), Mr. Emmanuel
Adebayo in the morning of November 8, 2006. He said “the meeting was
convivial and the parties departed”. He added that a few minutes after,
the Police Commissioner called Ojudu and told him the Inspector General
of Police (IGP) wanted to see him immediately in Abuja, but did not
inform him why the IGP wanted to see him.
Mr. Onanuga disclosed that
Both the Lagos State CP and Mr. Ojudu departed Lagos for Abuja at about
2.00pm on November 8. He was thereafter detained at Maitama Police
station in Abuja in an 8 by 8 feet cell with 23 other inmates.
He was however released on
bail on November 9. the Police attempted to link his arrest to political
killings in Ekiti State, South west Nigeria where Mr. Ojudu comes from.
