Journalist Brutalized by Policemen While on Assignment
Mr. David Amusa, the correspondent of an independent daily ‘National
Mirror’ newspaper in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in the Niger-delta area
was on March 31, 2008 severely beaten by a detachment of about 20
policemen while on assignment to cover the announcement of local council
election conducted on Saturday, March 29, 2008.

Newspaper Editor alleges threat by Police
The management of a Lagos-based daily ‘The Nation’ newspapers in Lagos
on February 21, 2008 alleged that its editor, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho was
being harassed by policemen whom the legal adviser of the media house,
Ms. Folake Adeoye said came from Ekiti State in South-west Nigeria.

Media Workers over report
Mr. Chido Okafor, a reporter with the Lagos based daily, ‘The Guardian’
newspaper and Mr. Peter Alele, the advert representative of the daily
were on February 20, 2008 subjected to humiliation in Warri, a
metropolis in Delta State in the Niger-delta area, South-south Nigeria
over a report on the Warri stadium.

Mr. Tunde Raheem, the Ondo state
(South-western Nigeria) correspondent of the private daily The Sun
newspaper was on February 6, 2008
arrested by the Police in the neighbouring Ekiti State while
investigating a murder case.

Political Thugs Beat up Magazine Manager
On 30
January 2008, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Managing Director of ‘TheNews’
magazine was beaten up by thugs, believed to be working for the People’s
Democratic Party (PDP) after he finished giving evidence in a libel
proceedings before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja.

Facts’ newspaper was ordered to be remanded in prison custody by a
Magistrate Court in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital in South-south
Nigeria following his arrest, detention, and arraignment for alleged

detained for Photographing Statue
On January 10, 2008 at about 4.30 pm local time, two journalists,
Fidelis Mbah of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Tade
Oludayo of Silverbird Television and Rhythm FM radio, were arrested and
detained by government security agents in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital
