Publisher Alleges Attack, Petitions Authorities

The Publisher of Warri-based “Mirror” Newspaper, Mr. Alex Oritsegbeyiwa has alleged that he was attacked by armed youths in Warri, Delta State in July 2005 and petitioned the Acting Inspector- General of Police (IG), Mr. Sunday Ehindero and President Olusegun Obasanjo asking them to order an investigation into the attack.

The publisher alleged that, on July 30, 2005, about 50 youths, he believed to be agents of the Secretary to the Delta State Government, descended on him and inflicted injuries on him while he was returning from a burial ceremony.

The publisher alleged that the youths acted on the instructions of the Secretary, because of a publication in the July edition of the newspaper, which they said, portrayed the Secretary in bad light.

He said the youths battered him with various weapons and later stripped him naked in the public glare.

He alleged further that the youths pursued him to a building where he ran into for safety, and threatened to burn the house should the occupants refuse to hand him over.

He said he reported the battery at a nearby police division, where a policewoman on duty referred him to the Central Hospital for medication.

The publisher has expressed fears on the safety of his immediate family members and that of the entire staff of the newspaper company.

He therefore appealed to the President and the AIG of Police to use their good offices to ensure that the matter was properly investigated and the culprits are brought to book, pointing out that the incident is a clear case of attempted murder.
