Hired Thugs Assault Four Journalists

On July 12, 2006 four journalists from three different media houses were beaten up by the body guards of one Mr. Jacob Idowu, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Taxi Drivers’ Unit in Akure, the Ondo State Capital, Southwestern Nigeria.

The journalists: Mr. Niyi Bello of The Guardian newspapers, Tope Okeowo of The Comet newspapers, Soji Adeniyi and Yemi Fadeyibi both of the Nigerian Tribune newspapers had trailed Mr. Jacob Idowu’s to his office to get his own side in the crisis rocking the taxi drivers union when he ordered his personal body guards to beat them up and in obedience to the order, severely beat up the journalists.

Akure town was thrown into violent crisis due to demonstrations by hundreds of taxi drivers in the town protesting alleged extortion by their leadership. Armed hoodlums loyal to Mr. Idowu confronted the protesting drivers.
