CMG Calls for Entries for its 2007 Media Awards

 

The Consultative Media Group on 2007 Elections (CMG) – an alliance of media stakeholders - is inviting media practitioners and organizations to enter their work for the 2007 Media Awards. The awards will be given for outstanding coverage of the electoral process under the two broad categories, namely outstanding coverage of women’s electoral rights and, outstanding coverage of youth activities that contribute towards building a civic culture of non violent elections. The awards seek to encourage excellence and accuracy in electronic and print coverage of these issues in the period leading up to the 2007 elections and beyond. The awards will be presented for coverage published or broadcast between July 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007.


Entries must be programs and articles that promote positive public attitudes towards women’s electoral rights and their participation in the electoral process or to reports and programs that contribute towards building a culture of constructive, non-violent involvement by youth in civic activities.


In all, the CMG plans to give out six awards under the youth category, three each for print and electronic media. Awards for the print media will be given under sub-categories for feature articles, cartoons and opinion-editorial articles while the ones for the electronic media will given for news/magazine stories, documentary/commentary and radio/television series. 

 

Ten awards will be given under the gender category with three each under the same sub-categories as above for print, radio and television respectively. Each of these awards will be given to articles or programs by entered by beat or desk editorial and production media professionals.

 

An additional award will be given in the best overall category for media organizations. Entries in this category will be opened to media organizations that can present a set of articles or programs that consistently demonstrate the qualities enumerate above, published or broadcast during the electoral period.

 Members of the Consultative Media Group (CMG) are drawn from the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), the Media Rights Agenda (MRA) and the International Press Centre (IPC), with the support of Global Rights and UNIFEM.
