Applications invited for CNN Multichoice
African Journalist of the Year Awards
Applications are invited from African journalists,
including freelancers, for the 2005 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of
the Year Awards. The competition is open to Africa-based professional
journalists and technicians who work in print, television, radio or
Internet-based media.
The CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year aims to reinforce the
importance of the journalist's role in Africa and to recognise and develop
journalistic talent across all disciplines. The Competition is open to
African professional journalists/technicians including African freelancers
working on the continent for media organisations that are African-owned or
principally based in the region or publish in Africa a publication which
is targeted at an African audience for reception within Africa. As the
competition strives to encourage freelance journalism throughout Africa,
the judges welcome independent entries from African freelance journalists
and technicians.
The Judges will
be looking for work which:
· Tells
the story in a clear and balanced manner
· Communicates
stories or issues from Africa in a comprehensive way
· Has
made these stories or issues accessible and relevant to their audiences
·
Demonstrates
investigative and journalistic flair
· Displays
well organised research, depth and insight
· Was
broadcast or published between January and December 2004, with proof
supplied.
The deadline for
receipt of entries is March 7, 2005.
Judging will take place
in April 2005 by a panel of independent judges with a knowledge and
experience of journalistic practices in Africa. Panel members cannot vote
on work entered by their organisation, employees or family members. Should
the quality of entries fall below the standard required, the judges
reserve the right not to select a finalist. The judges' decision is final
and binding. Submitted material cannot be returned.
The Categories
Participants
can choose to submit material relating to any of the categories listed
below. Entrants are strictly limited to submitting 2 entries per category.
The same piece may only be entered in one category.

entries please send the original AND photocopy of each submitted article
· Television
entries please send 2 VHS copies of each submitted piece
· Radio
entries please send 2 audiocassette copies of your submitted material
With the exception of Television & Radio General news; MKO
Abiola Print and the Mohamed Amin photographic award -- all categories are
open to print, television, radio and internet journalists.

Arts and Culture play an important role in
African society. The Arts have the power to transform lives and create
opportunities while culture, customs and traditions, are at the heart of
today's Africa. Stories should relate to any aspect of African Arts, (e.g.
visual art, music, dance, acting, writing, sculpture, crafts etc) or
culture.

Donated by his family through his company,
Camerapix, the photographic award is given in recognition of the life and
work of the late Mohamed Amin. The award may be given to either an
individual photograph or a photographic essay, maximum 5 photographs. Both
Black & White and colour photos are acceptable.
12. FREE
PRESS AFRICA AWARD
This award recognises journalistic work
that demonstrates courage and integrity and enhances the cause of media
freedom. Family members, the public, editors or
colleagues may also submit nominations.

The Prizes
There are 15 prizes available. These will be awarded
for the categories detailed above. A prize fund in excess of $150,000,
ensures that the finalists enjoy a complementary finalists' programme of
activities and workshops in Johannesburg culminating in the gala awards
ceremony. Category winners will also receive, a state-of-the-art laptop
computer with modem and printer and a substantial cash prize.
OVERALL
GRAND PRIZE: CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year
From the 15 category winners, the judges will award the grand prize to the
journalist whose individual piece or body of work merits the title CNN
MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year, whether they be a Print,
Television, Radio or Photographic entry. In addition to their category
prizes, the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year will receive a
further cash prize and will be invited to CNN headquarters in Atlanta.
Rules of
Entry
·
All entrants must be African professional
journalists/technicians including African freelancers working on the
African continent for media organisations that are African-owned or
principally based in the region or publish in Africa a publication which
is targeted at and received by an African audience
·
All entrants must be at least eighteen years
of age.
· No
entry fee is payable.
· Employees
(and their immediate families) of Turner Broadcasting System Europe Ltd. (TBSEL),
and their respective parent companies, subsidiaries and agencies are not
eligible to participate in the competition.
· Each
entry must have been published or broadcast in 2004.
· Applicants
are strictly limited to 2 entries per category; applications containing
more than 2 entries per category will be disqualified.
· Each
piece of material submitted may only be entered in one category however
the judges reserve the right to transfer material for consideration to
other categories at their discretion.
· The
judges uphold the integrity and reputation of the CNN MultiChoice African
Journalist of the Year competition and, as such, reserve the right to
disqualify any piece of work and/or finalist if in the judges' reasonable
opinion there exists reasonable doubt about the authenticity and/or
accuracy of the submitted piece.
· Finalists
will be required to sign affidavits of eligibility and releases granting
TBSEL, and all sponsors of the competition, the right to use their names,
voices, pictures and work submitted, without compensation, in any media
for the purpose of advertising/public relations and publicizing the
services of the sponsors and all matters related to the competition.
· Entries
should be made in accordance with the instructions given in this entry
form and must be received on, or before, March 7th 2005 at one of the
collection point addresses detailed on this form.
· TBSEL
and all sponsors of the competition will not accept liability for late or
lost entries, and illegible or fraudulent entries or acts shall render the
entrant ineligible.
· TBSEL
will be entitled to assume ownership rights to all entries received and
all entrants agree to execute any documents as may be necessary to
transfer such ownership.
· Unless
you expressly indicate otherwise, TBSEL shall be entitled to use the
information you provide to notify you of any future CNN MultiChoice
African Journalist competitions.
· The
judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
· 15
prizes will be awarded in the categories listed in this entry form..
· In
addition, one of these winners will be selected as the CNN MultiChoice
African Journalist. Subject to compliance with any legal or immigration
requirements as necessary, the CNN African Journalist of the Year will be
offered a return flight and accommodation to CNN Headquarters in Atlanta.
· The
winner is responsible for all applicable taxes as well as any other
expenses not included in the prize, including, but not limited to, meals,
personal expenses and insurance.
· The
flight is subject to airline availability and stopovers and/or open
tickets are not permitted.
· No
cash alternative to prizes. The sponsors reserve the right to substitute
any prizes, of reasonably comparable value, in the event that the award
prizes, for any reason, are, unavailable. Prizes are not transferable.
· In
the event of any discrepancy between the English terms and French terms
for the Francophone categories, and English terms and Portugese terms in
the Lusophone category the English terms and conditions will prevail.
· TBSEL
and all sponsors of the competition disclaim any liability for loss to any
person or property relating to the delivery and/or subsequent use of, or
participation in, any of the prizes awarded. The winners agree to abide by
any and all terms and conditions of the supplier(s) of the prizes.
