Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma

 

The Dart Center for Journalism and trauma, founded in 1999 and based at the University of Washington in Seattle, is a global, interdisciplinary network of news professionals, educators and health professionals which serves as a forum for print, broadcast and internet journalists to analyze issues, exchange ideas and advance education concerning coverage of violence and tragedy. The Dart Center also operates Dart Center in Europe, based in London, and Dart Center Australasia, based in Melbourne.

 

Violence and traumatic events-whether street crime, family violence, war and genocide, natural disaster and accidents, abuses of human rights etc- pose profound challenges to journalists. News reporting on traumatic events demands knowledge, skill and support; and the way these stories are reported has enduring impact on victims, on the public and on policy makers. The center is therefore dedicated to informed, effective and ethical media coverage of violence, conflict and tragedy and addresses the consequences of such coverage for those working in journalism

 

The Center advocates: .ethical and thorough reporting of trauma; Sensitive, professional treatment of victims and survivors by journalists; and Greater awareness by media organizations of the impact of trauma coverage on both news professionals and news consumers.

 

The Dart Center sponsors a wide range of educational programmes research projects and support services for news professionals, students and scholars.

 

Its current programmes include: The Dart Center Ochberg fellow Programme, a flagship activity of the centre that brings approximately 10 distinguished mid-carer journalists together each November for an intensive week of seminars and conversations about the reporting of traumatic news events; the annual Dart awards that recognize  newspaper and broadcast reporting the best portrays victims and their experiences with accuracy, insight and sensitivity while illustrating the effects of violence on victims’ lives and the process of recovery from emotional trauma, etc.

 

The Dart center maintains long term working relationships with a range of educational, academic and journalistic institutions and also partners with NGOs, training organizations and other institutions on individuals projects such as seminars and publications. It is a member of the council of Journalism organizations.
