Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma
The Dart Center for Journalism and trauma, founded in 1999 and based at
the University of Washington in Seattle, is a global, interdisciplinary
network of news professionals, educators and health professionals which
serves as a forum for print, broadcast and internet journalists to
analyze issues, exchange ideas and advance education concerning coverage
of violence and tragedy. The Dart Center also operates Dart Center in
Europe, based in London, and Dart Center Australasia, based in
Melbourne.
Violence and traumatic events-whether street crime, family violence, war
and genocide, natural disaster and accidents, abuses of human rights
etc- pose profound challenges to journalists. News reporting on
traumatic events demands knowledge, skill and support; and the way these
stories are reported has enduring impact on victims, on the public and
on policy makers. The center is therefore dedicated to informed,
effective and ethical media coverage of violence, conflict and tragedy
and addresses the consequences of such coverage for those working in
journalism
The Center advocates: .ethical and thorough reporting of trauma;
Sensitive, professional treatment of victims and survivors by
journalists; and Greater awareness by media organizations of the impact
of trauma coverage on both news professionals and news consumers.
The Dart Center sponsors a wide range of educational programmes research
projects and support services for news professionals, students and
scholars.
Its current programmes include: The Dart Center Ochberg fellow Programme,
a flagship activity of the centre that brings approximately 10
distinguished mid-carer journalists together each November for an
intensive week of seminars and conversations about the reporting of
traumatic news events; the annual Dart awards that recognize newspaper
and broadcast reporting the best portrays victims and their experiences
with accuracy, insight and sensitivity while illustrating the effects of
violence on victims’ lives and the process of recovery from emotional
trauma, etc.
The Dart center maintains long term working relationships with a range
of educational, academic and journalistic institutions and also partners
with NGOs, training organizations and other institutions on individuals
