Accomplished
journalists worldwide are eligible for the
John S.
Knight Fellowships at
Stanford
University in California, in the United States, for nine months of
independent study and reflection.
The
Fellowships are open to all kinds of journalists from outside the
U.S.,
including reporters, sub-editors, anchors, photographers, Web editors,
producers and cartoonists. Each year, the programme selects six to eight
candidates with at least five years experience in journalism and a good
command of English.
The deadline
for applications is December 15 of this year, for fellowships during the
2006-2007 academic year. This is earlier than in past years, when the
deadline was in March of the following year.
Fellows will
receive a US$55,000 stipend plus tuition, roundtrip airfare, and an
allowance for books, housing, health insurance and child care.
Participants
go to classes, do their own research, and attend special seminars with
guest speakers. Unlike many international programmes for journalists, all
activities are open to the fellows’ spouses or partners.
There are
various sponsors for the fellowships, including the Knight Foundation. The
foundation also reserves one fellowship every year for a Latin American
journalist.
