Political Thugs Attack Journalists at Press briefing

On December 7, 2007, armed bandits suspected to be political thugs loyal to a faction of a party invaded the Conference Hall of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Yola, Adamawa State, Northeast Nigeria during a news conference beating and injuring people indiscriminately and vandalizing the NUJ’s property.

The thugs arrived the NUJ Centre in three mini buses mid-way into a briefing being addressed by representatives of sons and daughters of Yola South under the aegis of concerned citizens of Yola South on their resolve to pass a vote of no confidence on their representative and to initiate a process for his recall.

Armed with dangerous weapons and cans of Premium Motor Spirit with the intention to burn down the NUJ secretariat, they beat up people perceived to be political opponents as well as reporters, stabbed others with knives and broken bottles and vandalized scores of vehicles belonging to their opponents and various property belonging to the NUJ. They also dispossessed journalists of their working tools, mobile telephone handsets and other communication equipment.

The police however arrived the scene before the thugs could set NUJ Building ablaze and arrested some of them.
