Journalist Alleges Threat to Life,
Petitions IGP
Mr. Aruga Joe Omokaro, an Assistant News
Editor with Independent Newspapers Limited (INL), publishers of
Independent titles alleged incessant threat to his life by one
Gbolahan Mohammed, a Superintendent of
Police (SP) who is the personal assistant to AIG Zone 2. On November 29,
he petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro on the matter.
Mr. Omokaro alleged that Gbolahan Mohammed had become a serious threat
to his life: constantly harassing, intimidating, and threatening him
wherever they come across each other in the course of his duty as a
journalist.
He said: “Gbolahan’s animousity and threat to my peace and life is dated
back to 2002 when he was personal assistant to former Lagos State
Commissioner of Police (CP), Young Arabamen. In my several efforts to
find out what my sins were, he resorted one day by telling me that I was
reporting negative stories against his boss, Arabamen, even when such
stories were factual.”
He recounted that he once reported the matter to Mr. Israel Ajao, the
current AIG Zone 2 when he was the Lagos CP and the hostility subsided
for two months before it resurfaced again
Omokaro cited several instances when Mohammed had subjected him to open
and embarrassing intimidation with serious threats to his life, the
recent being on November 28 when the IG was in Lagos. He claimed that on
that date, Mohammed followed him wherever he went and at a point blocked
his movement whereupon he hat to force his way out.
He therefore appealed to IGP Mike Ikiro and AIG Israel Ajao to conduct
investigations into the matter and save him from harm.
