Nigeria’s
Intelligence Police Raid ‘Fresh Facts’ Office
The
offices of ‘Fresh Facts’, a weekly newspaper based in Abuja, Nigeria’s
Federal Capital Territory were raided on October 24 by men suspected to
be officers of the State Security Service (SSS), Nigeria’s intelligence
Police.
The men
gained entry into the premises of the medium on Plot No. 2, Marte Close,
Area 3, Abuja by informing the security men at the gate that they were
there to place adverts.
According
to statement by Mr. Emma Akpoya, the general editor of the paper, the
4-man team led by Mr. Samuel Ilesanmi on gaining access into the
offices, demanded to see the publisher, who was not in the office at the
time.
The SSS
team then queried the staff in the office about the source of the story
carried in the week’s edition of the paper, entitled "Indian Prime
Minister's Visit: N500m on a day's visit".
When the
SSS operatives were reminded that the journalists were not bound to
disclose their source of information, they threatened to close down the
newspaper. |
