Calls for Nominations for Martin Ennals Human Rights Awards
The Martin Ennals Foundation is inviting individuals or organisations
working in the field of human rights to submit nominations for the 2008
Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders.
The award, worth 20,000 Euros (US$29,000), is given annually to an
individual or an organisation who has demonstrated an exceptional record
of combating human rights violations by courageous and innovative means.
Special consideration will be given to those who are at risk and in need
of immediate protection.
Winners are chosen by an international jury comprising 10 leading human
rights NGOS, including Human Rights Watch. The 2007 awards went to
Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, a policeman-turned-human-rights defender in
Burundi, and two Sri Lankan professors, Rajan Hoole and Kopalasingham
Sritharan, who have been monitoring violations by all warring parties in
their country for the past 18 years.
The deadline for submitting nominations for next year's awards is 9
December 2007.
Nomination form and further information about the award are available at
