MRA DEMANDS RELEASE OF BAYO ONANUGA,
BABAFEMI OJUDU
The Media Rights Agenda (MRA) condemns the arrest and
detention of two editors of the Independence Communications Network
Limited, Mr. Bayo Onanuga and Mr. Babafemi Ojudu.
The MRA is concerned that the Federal Military Government
and its security agencies have continued to disregard lawful institutions,
such as the courts and the Nigerian Press Council, established to
adjudicate on complaints of wrongdoing and, in proven cases, provide
redress.
We are distressed that the Government find it more
convenient to lean in favour of illegal and repressive measures in
redressing perceived and genuine wrongs.
The MRA wishes to draw the attention of the Federal
Military Government to the fact that its attitude betrays the hollowness
of its vaunted commitment to respect to renewed international ridicule.
We hereby call on the Federal Military Government to state
in clear and unequivocal terms the offences committed by Mr. Onanuga and
Mr. Ojudu and charge them before a court of competent jurisdiction for
trial as required by our constitution and the various regional and
international human rights instruments to which Nigeria is a signatory.
Failing this, we demand their immediate and unconditional
release.
Tive Denedo
National Secretary.
