MRA Welcomes Release of Chris Anyanwu
LAGOS, MONDAY JUNE 22, 1998:
The media Rights Agenda (MRA) welcomes the release of Chris Anyanwu which
is long overdue, from unlawful detention. Her release is a clear
indication that her imprisonment along with other journalists jailed in
1995, after secret trials on charges of treason from stories published by
their news magazines was a gross violation of their fundamental human
rights.
It is disheartening that journalists should be left to
waste away in detention solely for the non-violent exercise of their
rights to freedom of expression. Apparently, a clear path to genuine
reconciliation can only be achieved when all detained journalists and all
other political detainees are released.
Media Rights Agenda calls on the Federal Military
Government to immediately and unconditionally release all other
journalists who are currently detained or jailed in the course of their
professional duties. They include Kunle Ajibade, Ben-Charles Obi, George
Mbah, Babafemi Ojudu, Bagauda Kaltho, Okina Dessor, Moshood Fayewimo,
Adetokunboh Fakeye, Niran Malaolu and Rafiu Salau.
