WPFD Participants call for
True Dialogue
between the government and the people
A
one-day conference to commemorate the 2009 World Press Freedom Day was
held in Lagos on Monday, May 4, 2009. Organized by the United Nations
Information Centre (UNIC) in Lagos and Media Rights Agenda (MRA), the
Conference brought together scores of media owners, media managers,
editors and other media professionals as well as representatives of
civil society and other stakeholder groups to discuss the conference
theme: “The Role of the Media in Fostering Dialogue and Mutual
Understanding between the Government and the People”.

2009, assaulted by political thugs at the house of a chieftain of the

Participants Adopt Strategies to Promote the Right of Access to
Information in Health Matters in Nigeria
Participants at two pilot workshops organized by
ARTICLE 19, the Global Campaign for Free Expression, in partnership with
the Center for the Right to Health (CRH) and Media Rights Agenda (MRA),
have adopted strategies to promote the right of access to information in
health matters in two states of Nigeria, Enugu and Lagos.

Regulator Sanctions Private FM Radio over Broadcast
Nigeria’s broadcast sector regulator, the National Broadcasting
Commission (NBC) on April 27, 2009, fined a private radio station Adaba
FM, the sum of N500,000.00 (about US$3,448) for allegedly transmitting
on Saturday, April 25 "materials that were capable of inciting members
of the public to violence and consequently leading to breakdown of law
and order," while transmitting the coverage of the Ekiti State

Agenda Rejects Senate Committee Recommendations on FOI Bill
Media Rights
Agenda (MRA) announced its rejection of the recommendations of the
Senate’s Information Committee on the Freedom of Information Bill,
saying if passed as proposed it would be the worst access to information
law in the world and would bring Nigeria to ridicule.

Representatives Again Throws Out FOI Bill
Nigeria’s lower legislative chamber, the
House of Representatives on June 3, 2008, for
the seventh time, refused to take the Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill
at the Committee of the Whole (Third Reading). This came barely 24 hours
after the upper chambers, the Senate, held a Public Hearing on the Bill.

Africa FOI Centre
Calls on Liberian Government to Expedite Passage of FOI Bill
The Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) has welcome the steps
taken by Liberia to adopt a Freedom of Information law for the country
and called on the Liberian National Legislature to expedite action in
passing the Freedom of Information Bill submitted to it last month by a
coalition of ordinary citizens, media and civil society organizations.
