Nigerian Security Operatives Release Detained Editor

Mr. Musa Mohammed Awwal, Editor of the Kaduna-based Hausa Language weekly, Al-Mizan newspaper, who was arrested at about 4.00am on February 14, 2013, was released after eight days in custody.

Operatives of the State Security Service (SSS), accompanied by armed soldiers, had stormed his home in Kaduna in the early hours of February 14, searched his house and taken him to the SSS office in Abuja where he was detained.  The security operatives had seized his cell phone and laptop computer.

Musa Awwal was initially arrested on December 24, 2012 alongside his Al-Mizan colleague Aliyu Saleh after the newspaper published a story alleging that operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) had rounded up, detained and abused 86 youths in Potiskum, Yobe State. Musa Awwal and Aliyu Saleh were later released on January 1, 2013.

Musa Awwal was again arrested on February 14,  2013 and taken to Abuja where he was again detained till his release on February 22, 2013.
