The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Department (PAPs) will celebrate the 2024 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI) on November 6 and 7, at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the theme: “Safety of journalists in crisis and emergency context”.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of IDEI as well as the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in 2004, in Dakar, Senegal.

The global commemoration will be a one-day event, on November 6, 2024, with the morning sessions focusing on global issues, while the afternoon component will focus on Africa-specific issues.

The next day tagged a “Day of Action”, will allow partners to organize different activities at the AU Headquarters.

These activities will be action-oriented initiatives, such as launches of reports/projects/initiatives, strategic partnership meetings, trainings, workshops, exhibitions, discussing/validating subregional action plans, information sessions, etc.

All media stakeholders are invited to join in commemorating this important day.

In 2013, the UN General Assembly by Resolution 68/163 proclaimed November 2, as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, following the killing of two Radio France Internationale journalists in Mali.
