AFEX Calls for Applications for Network Coordinator

The African Freedom of Expression Exchange (AFEX) is calling for applications from eligible candidates for the position of a Network Coordinator. Candidates should have a minimum of first degree in Law, Journalism, Mass Communication, Political Science, Public Administration, International Development, Sociology or a related field.

Successful applicants will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and under the strategic direction and guidance of the AFEX Steering Committee. The Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination, implementation and management of AFEX programmes, projects and operations as approved by the AFEX Steering Committee. The position also involves networking with key stakeholders and fundraising for the Network.

The Network Coordinator will be responsible for advancing the work, goal and objectives of AFEX by facilitating networking and information exchange among members, other organisations and individuals working in fields relevant to AFEX’s mandate; will be acting as the primary point of contact for all AFEX-related issues; he/she will be expanding partnerships with various international, regional, and national governmental and non-governmental organisations.

The Coordinator will be facilitating, organising logistics and preparing materials for Steering Committee and General Meetings of AFEX, whether physical or virtual, including taking and circulating minutes of such meetings; creating mechanisms to ensure that information about AFEX and its activities are adequately disseminated amongst members and the general public through the use of strategic communication processes and tools including websites, newsletters, journals, bulletins, reports, among others; initiating and supporting fundraising activities of AFEX including the development and distribution of funding proposals to potential funders; initiating and maintaining contacts with funders.

Others functions of the coordinator are: contributing to event report writing, developing action plans, and writing annual reports;  attending meetings, workshops, conferences and other events as a representative of AFEX, as may be required;  keeping the network informed and updated on his/her work – keeping all the stakeholders informed.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate knowledge of communication, advocacy and partnership concepts; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work in multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environments; strong writing skills; and ability to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences as well as the ability to think creatively.   Good programme management skills and the ability to work under pressure on a number of projects and activities simultaneously; proven ability to independently identify and solve problems as well as pay attention to detail, good judgment and strategic thinking are desirable.

Interested applicant should be able to demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office programmes (particularly Word and Excel) and the use of the Internet.  Good knowledge of and ability to use social media and other new media tools in communicating with a range of audiences will be an added advantage; he/she should be willing to travel to diverse countries and work outside regular business hours when necessary; should have excellent written and oral knowledge of English while advanced working knowledge in French is required.
