The African Platform for Access to Information (APAI) has re-designed and re-launched its campaign website. The re-designed website contains the APAI Declaration in English, French, Arabic and Portuguese.
The APAI Declaration, which was adopted by stakeholders at the end of the first Pan African Conference on Access to Information (PACAI) held on September 17 to 19, 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa, sets out principles of access to information that are critical for the full realization of the right of access to information.
The website also contains other resources like national access to information laws in Africa, freedom of information standards and principles, as well as various publications on access to information. It details milestones in APAI’s five year old campaign.
APAI Working Group, formed in 2009, is a network of nine civil society organizations that are working to promote access to information in Africa through the implementation of a series of joint activities that would lead to the adoption of a comprehensive instrument to advance the right of access to information in all its dimensions, regionally as well as internationally.
With its secretariat hosted by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) in Windhoek, Namibia, other member organizations of APAI are Media Rights Agenda (MRA) in Nigeria; the Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) in Uganda; Article 19 offices in East and West Africa (based in Kenya and Senegal); the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ); Highway Africa in South Africa; Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in Ghana; the Open Democracy Advice Centre (ODAC) in South Africa; and The African Editors’ Forum (TAEF).
