The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant, an international photographic competition for young photographers aged 24 or under, or anyone studying a full-time photographic course, has now opened applications for the 2026 edition. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of 12 photographs along with a proposal outlining the project they would pursue if selected.
The successful recipients of the grant will receive £10,000 to fund their proposed project, access to Canon camera equipment on loan, and publication of their work through The Guardian. Winners are also eligible for the Hamburg Portfolio Review and the VII Mentorship Programme, providing valuable opportunities to connect with leading professionals in the photography industry.
In addition, the recipient will benefit from a year-long mentorship with renowned photojournalist and Legacy of War Foundation Founder and CEO, Giles Duley. One winner will also receive the Gentex Corp Personal Safety Award, which includes personal protective equipment, body armour, and hostile environment training. Save the Children will also select one of the finalists for a professional photography commission, while several finalists and entrants will have their work showcased through the grant’s judging panel and official channels.
The competition is free to enter; however, to apply, candidates must provide their personal details, including their name, date of birth, contact information, and, where applicable, details of their photography course and tutor. Applicants aged 25 or older must also submit proof of their current student status. The application should include a portfolio of 12 photographs, extended captions in PDF format, and a well-developed project proposal explaining how the grant would be used. Applicants are encouraged to follow the submission instructions carefully before sending their entries.
Established more than three decades ago, the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant was created in memory of photojournalist Ian Parry, who died while covering the Romanian Revolution in 1989 at the age of 24. Since then, the grant has helped launch the careers of many emerging photographers by providing funding, mentorship, international exposure, and access to a supportive network that values quality photojournalism.
