The Shorenstein Center, a research center focused on media and the flow of essential information in societies, at the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States of America is inviting applications from journalists, scholars, policymakers, and practitioners in media and public policy for its Fellowship Programme. The programme allows fellows to carry out groundbreaking research and be part of Harvard’s vibrant academic community.
Designed to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and research, the programme seeks to advance understanding at the intersection of media, politics, and public policy. Fellows will have the opportunity to work independently on projects that align with the Shorenstein Center’s mission while engaging with students, faculty, and peers in a collaborative environment.
Since its inception in 1986, the Fellowship Programme has been a central feature of the Shorenstein Center’s work, promoting rigorous inquiry and meaningful conversations on the creation, dissemination, and impact of essential information. The programme brings together experienced professionals from diverse fields, providing a platform that addresses the complex challenges facing media and democracy in today’s world.
The Fellowship Programme is open to mid-to-senior-career professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, including journalists, news influencers and creators; civic tech and media innovators; nonfiction authors and scholars in fields like political science or media studies; and policymakers, political advisors, and policy analysts.
Fellows are expected to produce original content or programming such as a short expert commentary, an op-ed or a webinar series that aligns with the Center’s mission, as well as engage with the Center’s research community by participating in events, mentoring students, and advising on Center projects.
Fellows work independently, with the support of the Shorenstein Center’s staff, on projects or research agendas agreed upon during the application process. The fellowship term offers access to Harvard’s libraries and facilities, providing resources to enrich the fellow’s work. Whether in residence or participating through hybrid arrangements, fellows are encouraged to dedicate their time fully to the fellowship and the intellectual community at Harvard.

The next fellowship will begin on September 1, 2027. Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2027. In some cases, fellows may be allowed to start their fellowship in January.
