The Stigler Center, a hub dedicated to understanding the interaction between politics and the economy through research on regulatory capture, is now inviting applications from journalists across all forms of media worldwide to join its Journalists in Residence Programme, designed to strengthen their expertise, expand their analytical skills, and provide a unique academic grounding that supports impactful reporting on the critical issues shaping business and society today.

Participants not only gain access to world-class academic resources but also become part of a global network of media professionals committed to excellence in business journalism. The collaborative environment fosters cross-cultural learning, while the immersive experience at the Hyde Park campus equips journalists with the tools to navigate complex global economic and policy debates with greater insight and confidence.

The programme is encouraging journalists with proven experience in the media, strong proficiency in English, and a keen interest in broadening their understanding of political economy to apply.

Participants in the Journalists in Residence Programme are expected to make the most of their academic and professional journey by fully engaging with the opportunities provided. Each journalist will audit three classes, actively contribute to discussions, and complete all required readings and assignments. This academic commitment ensures they benefit from the rigorous learning environment while enhancing their ability to report on complex issues with greater depth.

In addition, participants are required to attend Stigler Center seminars, lectures, conferences, and social events, as well as other activities recommended by the Center. They are encouraged to engage respectfully with their cohort and the broader university community, fostering collaboration and mutual learning. To formalise this commitment, participants will sign a letter of agreement with the Center, affirming their understanding of the programme’s goals and guidelines.

The Journalists in Residence Programme offers a unique combination of academic enrichment and professional development. Participants will have access to exclusive seminars, world-class faculty, and a vibrant global network of peers.

The programme also provides practical support, including reimbursement for economy-class airfare to and from Chicago, coverage of SEVIS and visa application fees, and a stipend of $14,000 to support living expenses during the 12-week residency. This stipend is subject to U.S. tax withholding; and international participants are encouraged to review their country’s tax treaty with the United States for specific details.

In addition to auditing classes at one of the world’s top business schools, the journalists in residence will participate in seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and across the wider university. They will also have opportunities to collaborate with faculty, students, and fellow journalists, write for the ProMarket publication, and benefit from a designated study space.

Upon successful completion of the programme, each journalist will receive a certificate of participation, underscoring their commitment to advancing excellence in business and economic reporting.

To be considered for the Journalists in Residence Programme, applicants must complete the online application and submit the required materials. These include a current curriculum vitae, personal statements outlining their interest in and goals for the programme, two letters of recommendation, and three published news articles. For TV or radio journalists, links to video or audio files should be included in a PDF or Word document, accompanied by English transcriptions. If articles are not originally published in English, applicants should provide both the original and translated versions.

Non-native English speakers are also required to submit proof of English proficiency unless they hold a degree from a university where English is the primary language of instruction. Acceptable forms of proof include certificates or standardised test scores (such as TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, Cambridge, or Duolingo), an English equivalency diploma from an accredited institution, verified work experience in an English-speaking environment, or a formal letter from an employer confirming language skills.

Applications close on October 1, 2025.
