Journalists and other media professionals from around the world have been invited to apply for the WCSJ2027 Travel Fellowship, a programme designed to support participation in the 14th World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ2027) scheduled to take place in London, in the United Kingdom, from September 6 to 9, 2027.
The conference, which is being hosted by the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) and the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ), will be held at Central Hall Westminster in London, under the theme “Strengthening Science Journalism Through Global Networks.” It is expected to bring together journalists, writers, communicators, educators, and other professionals from around the world.
The Travel Fellowship programme is intended to broaden international participation and improve diversity and representation, particularly among professionals who have limited opportunities to secure funding for international conferences. It will support successful applicants who would otherwise be unable to attend the global conference because of limited access to funding.
Successful applicants will receive financial support towards travel to and from London, visa application costs, limited local transport, and up to six nights of accommodation. The fellowship also covers full conference registration, as well as refreshments and lunches provided as part of the conference programme. However, the fellowship does not provide per diem payments.
The opportunity is open to journalists and other media professionals covering science and related subjects, including engineering, climate and health, even where science journalism is not their primary professional specialisation.
Students studying science journalism, journalism, media studies, science communication, and related disciplines are also eligible to apply, while researchers and teachers in journalism, media studies, or science communication may also be considered where they have a demonstrable track record of journalism or media production.
Applicants will undergo a competitive international selection process based on their professional background and experience, motivation for attending the conference, potential benefit and contribution, quality of work, and demonstrated financial need.
Applicants are expected to submit a curriculum vitae or résumé of no more than two pages, a professional biography, examples of work published or produced during the previous two years and a letter of support from an employer, editor, educational institution, or relevant professional association.
Candidates will also be required to explain why they want to attend WCSJ2027, what they hope to learn, how participation will benefit their work, and what knowledge or expertise they can contribute to the international science journalism community.
They will additionally be asked how they intend to share the knowledge and experience gained from the conference after returning to their professional communities.
The organisers said applicants are expected to be committed to the principles of accurate, fair, and transparent science communication and journalism, including editorial independence, disclosure of conflicts of interest, and proper attribution of sources.
The conference is a major international gathering for journalists and communicators reporting on science and technology, and the 2027 edition will feature professional development workshops, keynote presentations, parallel sessions, field trips, and networking opportunities, while providing participants with opportunities to engage with developments in science and technology.
