A combined team of armed law enforcement and security operatives on April 15, 2023, chased away journalists from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Yola, Adamawa State, where they had gone to cover the collation of results of the supplementary governorship election held in the State.

The journalists who arrived at the collation centre at about 3 pm to cover the process were turned back by the security officers on guard.

A police officer told reporters: “This order is from above that we should not allow journalists inside the collation centre for now.” The police reportedly claimed that they had accredited journalists whom they would invite to cover the collation and announcement of the supplementary election results.

The journalists, who had been accredited to cover the supplementary election, were mostly from the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Adamawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
