Cairo to Host Third MIL, Global Understanding Conference

Cairo, Egypt’s capital city, will host experts, educators, policymakers, media professionals, and young leaders from around the world from April 27 to 29, 2026, for the third Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and Global Understanding Conference. The gathering will focus on how Media and Information Literacy can help people better understand today’s fast-changing digital world, especially with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Organised by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in cooperation with the UNESCO MILID Network and the MIL Alliance, the conference builds on the legacy of the 2024 edition (Cairo Declaration for Peace and Global Understanding) and the 2025 edition (Barcelona MIL Action Agenda).  The conference aims to bring people together to share ideas, strengthen dialogue, and explore practical ways to promote peace and global understanding in the AI era.

The 2026 edition will combine two main events, a Global Policy Forum and an International Scientific Congress. While the Policy Forum will bring leaders together to discuss how artificial intelligence is shaping communication, democracy, and human security, the Scientific Congress will provide space for researchers and academics to present new studies and practical ideas. Together, these sessions aim to connect policy, research, and real-world action, ensuring that technology is guided by ethics, responsibility, and a shared commitment to peace.

The conference will also enable open dialogue and collaboration among different groups, including government officials, scholars, civil society organisations, journalists, and young people. Participants will explore key issues such as disinformation, hate speech, digital safety, and the ethical use of technology. By encouraging honest conversations and shared learning, the event seeks to strengthen global cooperation and ensure that artificial intelligence supports unity, respect, and peaceful coexistence rather than division.

Organisers say the conference is not just about discussion, but about action. Participants will be encouraged to share practical solutions, successful projects, and policy ideas that can be applied in their own countries and communities. By the end of the three-day gathering, the goal is to leave Cairo with stronger partnerships, clearer strategies, and a renewed commitment to using Media and Information Literacy as a tool for peace in an AI-driven world.

Cairo, known for its rich history and cultural diversity, offers a vibrant backdrop for the conference. Beyond the formal sessions, attendees will have opportunities to network, share experiences, and learn from local initiatives that have successfully promoted media literacy. Organisers hope that this gathering will not only strengthen global understanding but also inspire concrete actions that participants can take back to their own communities.
