The University of Chicago Booth School of Business in the United States of America has opened applications for the Spring 2027 cohort of its Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Programme, offering journalists from around the world an opportunity to spend approximately 12 weeks at its campus in Chicago studying political economy, auditing classes, and engaging with leading academics and fellow journalists.

The application deadline is September 20, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Chicago time, while successful applicants are expected to be notified by the end of December 2026. The programme is tentatively scheduled to run from March 15 to May 31, 2027.

Launched in 2017, the Journalists in Residence Programme is organised by the Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State at Chicago Booth.

The programme is designed to provide what the Centre describes as a transformative learning experience for journalists working across different forms of media and to help strengthen their understanding of political economy and business reporting.

It is open to journalists from around the world who have some years of professional experience, are proficient in English, and are interested in deepening their knowledge and understanding of political economy.

Participants will spend about three months at the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus, where they will audit courses, attend seminars and workshops, interact with scholars, and collaborate with journalists from different countries.

Among the benefits offered to successful applicants are reimbursement for economy-class travel to and from Chicago, reimbursement of SEVIS and visa application fees, and a $14,000 stipend to help cover living expenses during the 12-week programme.

Participants will also receive health insurance through the University’s student and visitor plan, subject to the programme’s conditions, as well as guidance and resources to assist them in finding short-term accommodation in Chicago.

Those who successfully complete the programme will receive a certificate of participation.

The programme will give participating journalists the opportunity to audit classes at Chicago Booth, participate in seminars and workshops across the University, and engage with faculty members, students, and other participants.

Participants may also have the opportunity to write for ProMarket, the Stigler Center’s publication focusing on political economy and the interaction between markets, competition, and public policy.

The Stigler Center said participants would be expected to audit three classes, take part actively in class discussions, complete required readings and assignments, and attend seminars, lectures, conferences, and other activities organised or recommended by the Centre.

Participants are also expected to have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses for up to the first month of the programme, as the processing and disbursement of the stipend may take up to a month.

The Centre said its broader mission includes enriching public debate on the interaction between politics and the economy, noting the crucial role of the media in gathering and disseminating information about the behaviour of market actors and uncovering potential wrongdoing.

According to the announcement, the programme was established to help shape leaders in business reporting by equipping journalists with a deeper understanding of economic and political issues and exposing them to world-class faculty and a global network of colleagues.
