Datafest Calls for Expression of Interest for Datafest Create-A-Thon

The Datafest Africa, an annual data conference that brings together data professionals and industry leaders from across the African continent, is now accepting expressions of interest from individuals and journalists across the continent for its Datafest Create-A-Thon, a competition that provides artists from across Africa with the opportunity to actively engage and delve into the multifaceted aspects of data and technology from a feminist perspective.

The Create-A-Thon, which aims to empower artists to explore the intersection of data and technology from a feminist perspective, kicks off with a showcase of digital artworks that illuminate themes such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Feminism.

Eight winners will have their works featured in an exclusive exhibition at Datafest Africa and will each receive a prize of US$250. The initiative calls for embracing feminist perspectives in the realm of data and technology and urges artists to wield their creativity as a force for social transformation in Africa and beyond.

Applicants are encouraged to craft their theme from any of the following:

  • • Artificial Intelligence
  • • The Gig Economy
  • • Digital Restitution
  • • Innovation
  • • Data Feminism and Futures
  • • Online Safety

The Datafest 2024 Create-a-thon represents a significant stride towards cultivating a deeper comprehension of data and technology as seen through the eyes of African artists. Beyond its celebration of artistic expression, the competition stands as a compelling instrument for raising awareness and fostering a collective consciousness regarding the paramount importance of feminist data and technology in the African continent.

The Create-a-thon is a space for art created with technology that addresses socioeconomic, cultural, and humanitarian issues. Applicants should submit 2D work using any digital process including original generated/graphic imagery, A.I generated imagery, photo-manipulation, plotter/drawing machine imagery, generative imagery, XR generated imagery.

Eight winners will be selected to be part of an exclusive exhibition at Datafest Africa and the winners will receive a prize money of US$250 each.
