In commemoration of 2023 Global Encryption Day, Digital Rights Groups, including Media Rights Agenda (MRA), have urged governments and the private sector to reject efforts to undermine encryption and instead pursue policies that enhance, strengthen, and promote the use of strong encryption to protect people everywhere.

Emphasizing this in a joint statement, the groups said: “Encryption is a critical technology that helps keep people, their information, and communications private and secure. It underpins online trust, protects members of vulnerable communities, and safeguards the data of governments, businesses, and citizens from criminals and other malicious actors.”

They expressed concerns about the actions of some governments and organizations that are pushing to weaken encryption, which would create a dangerous precedent that compromises the security and privacy of billions of people around the world, pointing out that such actions in any country would weaken encryption and endanger everyone.

The groups highlighted the importance of strong encryption which they said is a critical tool for a safer world.

They expressed their support towards the efforts of companies in protecting their customers through the deployment of strong encryption on their services and their platforms.
