Divisional Police Officer Batters JAMZ FM General Manager

On September 19, 2021, Mr Tony Awobode, the General Manager of JAMZ 100.1FM, a privately-owned radio station based in Ibadan, Oyo State, was reportedly severely beaten in Ibadan by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Iyaganku Police station in the city and his men.

Tony who was riding on a power bike was stopped by the DPO who alleged that his car mirror was hit by his power bike while he was trying to cross towards the Aleshinloye axis.

However, efforts by Tony to exonerate himself failed even though he stopped and disembarked check and confirm that there was no mark or sign of friction on the side mirror. His explanations fell on deaf ears as his attempts only attracted slaps and battery from the police officer.

The DPO who was visibly angry that Tony was speaking trying to explain while he was talking and even showing effrontery to prove his claims were wrong showed no decorum as he descended on his victim with varying degrees of battery.

While the situation lasted, the General Manager who was seated on his bike was struggling not to let the bike fall down so as not to lead to another accident but the police officer who was in mufti assaulted him the more.

The beating and assault resulted in some injuries, swollen face, and bruises on the media manager, as well as damages to his crash helmet, the DPO later called his officers who came to continue the beating before arresting him.

The policemen who arrested him also seized mobile phone and cut off access to family members and relatives.

The beating and assault continued at the station where he was taken and the tyres of his power bike were deflated.
