Rhett A. Butler, Founder & CEO, Mongabay

Mongabay.org is inviting applications for the Sue Palminteri WildTech Reporting Fellowship 2021. Mongabay.com is developing the fellowship in Sue’s name to honour her interest in conservation, technology, and journalism by providing opportunities for students and new journalists to gain experience in conservation technology and writing

It is a part-time, six-month opportunity supported by a special fund created in the memory of Sue Palminteri. Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their writing skills and have their news stories be published on Mongabay’s renowned website which boasts over two million global readers every month.

The Fellow will be working virtually (at home or wherever they feel most productive) with set deadlines to be met. Mongabay.org is flexible on how many hours per week the fellow is able to work. Some weeks could require more hours than others depending on the editorial stage of each assignment; Mongabay Fellow has to be flexible and plan accordingly.

Applicants are required to submit a resume and a cover letter indicating why the applicant is interested and what values and skills s/he can contribute to Mongabay; indicate whether he/he has previous experience in conservation technology or related fields. If not, explain what compelled the applicant to apply for this opportunity.

Applicants are also to submit a writing sample from a journal entry or blog article. Applicants who do not have a sample can choose one from the following three articles to complete a writing sample (600 words max.)

  • A new use of technology to solve an old problem: Estimating the population size of a burrow nesting seabird
  • Can Handheld Thermal Imaging Technology Improve Detection of Poachers in African Bushveldt?
  • Adoption and consequences of new light-fishing technology (LEDs) on Lake Tanganyika, East Africa

Optionally, an applicant can submit an additional writing sample of his/her own.

Applicants are advised to have these items prepared before beginning the application process and should be submitted using the online application form to send their materials as applications submitted by email will not be accepted. Application deadline is May 31, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. EDT (New York time)
