The Ferriss–UC Berkeley Psychedelic Journalism Fellowship is a project of the University of California (UC) Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and the U.C. Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics that offers ten $10,000 reporting grants per year to journalists reporting in-depth print and audio stories on the science, policy, business, and culture of this new era of psychedelics. The fellowship is currently accepting applications until January 31, 2026.
In addition to underwriting individual stories, the fellowship aims to establish and nurture a new generation of journalists covering the frontlines of the new era of psychedelics.
The Ferriss–UC Berkeley Psychedelic Journalism Fellowship team seek big, underreported, and narratively compelling stories placed in rich political, economic, scientific, and cultural contexts. The team is also committed to supporting journalists from diverse backgrounds and of all nationalities.
Reporting grant applicants are required to submit a well-researched and compelling story pitch, three published or aired work samples, and a resume, including two references.
Although not required, a letter from a media outlet expressing interest in publishing or airing the applicant’s story will substantially improve the chances of receiving a grant. Note that fellows will be chosen by a panel of working editors and journalists.
The Ferriss–UC Berkeley Psychedelic Journalism Fellowship team do not assign stories and cannot consult on proposals or story pitches before they are submitted. They also do not accept proposals via email.
Prospective applicants should note that the reporting grants are intended to cover reporting costs and living expenses, as news organisations are expected to pay journalists for their work once it is published or aired.
