Founder, Fourth Estate’s Awesome Journalism
The Fourth Estate’s Awesome Journalism℠ grant aimed at fostering, supporting and incubating a sustainable and vibrant free press is now open for applications.
The organisers give a monthly $1,000 micro-grant to a journalism project that commits a crazy, brilliant, positive act of journalism in the public interest.
The grant is available to anyone – individuals, groups and organisations. Applicants need not be working journalists to apply.
According to Fourth Estate, the definition of “awesome” is intentionally left vague and up to the imagination. It could mean making someone stop and think, or spreading information or something else — think social good, an informed society, and beyond!
Applicants must meet certain requirements to be selected, and these include having idea or project that commits an act of public interest journalism; projects that are attainable and can be completed within 3-6 months of the grant; avoiding using grant for routine personal expenses or operating expenses for an established organization; projects that upholds the Fourth Estate’s principles, standards and practices of Truth, Transparency and Community; agreeing that the results of the project must be shareable/published online under a free license, or otherwise be open and made freely and widely available.
Projects that are personal and limited in their impact and existing projects or efforts that would not see significant incremental benefit from a small grant will not be supported.
The Fourth Estate encourages organisations to join in the project, as well as start local chapters.
Trustees each contribute towards the $1,000 no-strings-attached grant, and they alone decide by consensus who will receive the grant.
Membership is not required or a condition of a grant award, but Forth Estate welcomes applicants who want to become a member.
Applications may be submitted at any time. The organisers review applications and decide on the recipient monthly. Applicants that are not replied 3-4 months, should know that their project we not selected. Applications from previous months are considered, so there is no need to apply again unless the idea is new.
