The Inter American Press Association (IAPA), in collaboration with Proyecto Desconfío (Argentina) and Fundación para el Periodismo (Bolivia), has announced the fifth edition of the Global Summit on Disinformation, scheduled to take place online on September 17 and 18, 2025. The free, international summit will bring together leading media professionals, fact-checkers, researchers, academics, and civil society actors from across the globe to confront the escalating crisis of disinformation.
With a strong focus on artificial intelligence, political polarisation, media literacy, and platform regulation, the summit aims to foster global cooperation and practical solutions to safeguard truth and uphold the public’s right to accurate information.
Building on its growing reputation since its launch in 2020, the Global Summit on Disinformation has become a key platform for cross-border collaboration in the fight against false and misleading information. This year’s edition will feature high-level panel discussions, interactive workshops, and live interviews with prominent voices in journalism and digital policy. Organisers expect an even wider reach in 2025, with simultaneous translation available in English and, for the first time, Portuguese, allowing for broader participation across linguistic regions.
Throughout its previous four editions, the summit has attracted more than 6,000 participants from 45 countries across five continents, offering insight from over 100 leading experts. This year’s gathering is expected to expand its global footprint even further, emphasising the need for coordinated, international responses to the spread of disinformation. Organisers describe the summit as a vital space for exchanging best practices, building alliances, and empowering citizens to think critically in an increasingly complex information ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Carlos Lauría, the Executive Director of the Inter American Press Association, emphasised the urgency of collective action, stating that the summit offers a “unique opportunity to coordinate efforts and strengthen alliances in the face of one of the greatest challenges of our time.” Echoing this sentiment, Adrián Pino, the Executive Director of Proyecto Desconfío, highlighted the summit’s role in uniting those who defend the right to information daily, stressing that “disinformation knows no borders, which is why we need global, coordinated responses.”
As the threat of disinformation continues to evolve, amplified by the misuse of digital platforms and emerging technologies like AI, the 2025 Global Summit aims to equip participants with practical tools, research insights, and collaborative strategies to counter false narratives. With media credibility and public trust at stake, the summit underscores the urgent need for a united global front to protect the integrity of information and support informed, democratic societies.
