IAMC Calls for Submissions of Stories for Human Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Awards

The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), a Washington DC-based advocacy group is calling on journalists of any nationality who have reported on the human rights and religious freedom issues in India are invited to apply for the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Awards which aim to recognize outstanding stories that delve into human rights issues and the lived experiences of religious minorities and marginalized communities in India.

The awards seek to honour journalists whose work meets the highest standards of reporting, shedding light on overlooked issues, offering fresh perspectives on familiar topics, and challenging stereotypes about marginalized groups. This initiative highlights the importance of high-quality journalism in bringing attention to critical issues and promoting a deeper understanding of diverse communities.

The awards are available in five different categories as follows: Best Text Reporting on Human Rights & Religious Freedom; Best Photo Story on Human Rights and Religious Freedom;  Best Video Story on Human Rights and Religious Freedom;  HRRF Young Journalist of the Year Award 2024; and HRRF Best Media Organization Award.

These categories collectively highlight and celebrate the diverse and impactful work being done in the field of human rights and religious freedom journalism, encouraging journalists to continue their important contributions to these critical issues.

Entries must be in English, while video submissions can be in any language but must include English subtitles. Eligible stories must be published in newspapers (local, regional, national, or international), magazines (both online and print), or news websites; stories published on personal blogs are not eligible. Entries can be submitted by individual journalists or teams of journalists.

Entries must have been published between August 1, 2023, and July 31, 2024. Journalists are encouraged to submit entries in multiple categories, and they may submit either a single piece or a series of related articles or stories on the same topic. Submissions will be judged on the overall merit of the piece, considering the quality of reporting, investigative effort, informational value, resourcefulness, accuracy, and contribution to the broader understanding of the issue.

No entry fees are required. Entries must be submitted through our online platform. It is essential to review all category-specific requirements before submitting, as no changes can be made after submission. This ensures that all entries meet the necessary criteria and are evaluated fairly.

The competition opens for entries on July 5, 2024, and closes on July 31, 2024. The awards ceremony will be held in the last week of August in Chicago, United States.
