The International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) is inviting the general public to participate in a workshop with IFEX members and other stakeholders committed to ending the persistent problem of impunity for crimes aimed at silencing freedom of expression and information. The workshop titled Confronting Impunity: A Strategy Workshop with IFEX Campaigns will take place in Helsinki, Finland on May 2, 2016.

The workshop is geared towards providing a unique opportunity for participants to contribute ideas and build concretely on the work being done to combat impunity. The workshop hopes to leverage on the advantage of the IFEX network through information-sharing and strategic planning for collaboration between local and international groups to ensure progress in emblematic cases of attacks on journalists, bloggers, artists and human rights defenders that have gone uninvestigated and unpunished.

According to IFEX, “The focus of the workshop is on collaborating for impact on particular cases of impunity so we are asking participants to share a brief, written overview of a priority case or anti-impunity initiative that your organisation is currently working and include it in the section provided on your registration form.”

“Our objective is to identify a number of common cases/initiatives among the group where local and international organisations can begin to collaborate and form strategies by building on shared strengths, areas of expertise and opportunities for impact.”

At the workshop, IFEX will provide an overview of the No Impunity Campaign, including its objectives, main activities and key emblematic cases being highlighted. Individuals directly impacted by these cases will speak personally about their campaigns and strategies to bring those responsible to justice.  The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will provide a breakdown of the key elements of a campaign strategy based on CPJ’s 2016 Impunity Campaign Plan and the IFEX Campaigns Toolkit. This will serve as a template to direct discussions in the next session towards the formulation of collaborative strategies between participant organisations.
