The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the 2025 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, which offers academic and professional advancement opportunities for women and nonbinary journalists who cover social justice and human rights.

Named after the 1998 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner and Boston Globe correspondent who was killed in Iraq in May 2003, the Fellowship was established to honour Neuffer’s legacy while advancing her work in the fields of human rights and social justice.

Selected Fellows will spend a semester at the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and The Boston Globe engaging in various activities such as auditing variety of classes, attending seminars and events, conducting independent research, and gaining practical experience in newsrooms. After the semester, Fellows will intern for two months in New York City at The New York Times.

Applicants, from any country around the world, must be working journalists with at least three years of full-time, professional journalism experience; proficient in spoken and written English; freelancer journalists are eligible. Internships and journalism-related work completed as a university student do not count as professional experience.

Applicants should submit a complete application, including a biography, resume, statement of interest, fellowship goals, work samples, and letters of recommendation.

Selected fellows will receive financial support covering living expenses, housing, airfare, health insurance, and visa application fees. The fellowship does not include a salary, but it offers invaluable professional development opportunities at two of the most esteemed news organizations in the United States.

While family members are allowed to accompany a fellow during the programme, arrangements and expenses related to their travel and residence are the responsibility of the Fellow.

Applications for the 2025 Neuffer Fellowship will be accepted from March 4 to April 21, 2024. Fellows will be selected in June 2024, while the fellowship will begin in February 2025 in Boston and concludes in July 2025 in New York City.
