Members of the Neighbourhood Security Watch (NSW), a vigilante group in Ebonyi State, reportedly attacked journalist Mr Godwin Aliuna, leaving him hospitalised.

Mr Aliuna, who serves as a correspondent for the Daily Asset newspaper and Editor of The Nations News Nigeria online, was covering an event at the open hall of the Ministry of Border Peace and Conflict Resolution at the Old Government House in Abakaliki when the incident occurred. Reports indicate that Prof. Paul Awo Nwobasi, the Commissioner for Border Peace and Conflict Resolution, identified Mr Aliuna and ordered him to leave the venue, sparking a confrontation. According to Aliuna, the incident escalated when the Commissioner allegedly instructed one of his aides to delete all contents from the journalist’s phone.

As Aliuna began to leave, the Commissioner, losing his temper, charged at him, pushing him and signalling security operatives to arrest him, after which he was subjected to further assault.

The Neighbourhood Security Watch, which carried out the attack, is affiliated with the Ministry of Internal Security.
