
Journalist from around the world are invited to apply for the 32nd edition of the Lorenzo Natali Media Prize which celebrates the work of journalists in revealing human impacts of climate, gender equality, digital infrastructure, human development, jobs, peace, and giving a voice to the poorest and most vulnerable communities around the world.
Application can be in any language but it should be translated either to English, French, Spanish, Portuguese or German.
Established in 1992, the Lorenzo Natali Journalism Prize has celebrated excellence in journalism as the European Union’s (EU’s) flagship journalism award, commemorating the former Vice-President of the European Commission, Lorenzo Natali, who strongly promoted and furthered European development policies. The EU organizes the Lorenzo Natali Prize as part of its efforts to promote development, human rights and democracy and help lift developing countries out of poverty.
The awards are in four categories: the Best Emerging Journalist Award, Investigative Journalism Award, Special Award (photo journalism) and Freedom Journalism Award.
To qualify for the Best Emerging Journalist Award, the journalist should be within the age of 18-25 years as at the time of submission with his/her story published by the media outlet based in any of the eligible countries.
For the Investigative Journalism Award, eligible journalists are those whose objective is to uncover crimes, injustice, and corruption. Eligible for the Special Awards – Photojournalism are work published by a media outlet based in one of the eligible countries in recognition of the impact of visual storytelling in conveying the complex realities of our world. The Freedom Journalism Award is for media outlets that focus on entertaining, educating, engaging and informing the audience.
The winners of each category will be chosen by the jury which comprises of international renowned journalists and representatives from key non-governmental organizations around the world. Winners will receive EUR10,000 each as the prize and the Best Emerging Journalist will be offered work placement or traineeship with a media partner. The winners will be announced at the award ceremony in Brussels later in 2024.
Deadline for the submission of entries is June 30, 2024 at 23:59 CEST.
