The Korean Video Journalists Association (KVJA) and the May 18 Memorial Foundation are now accepting entries for the Hinzpeter Awards from video journalists from around the world who report on global citizens’ efforts for democracy, human rights, and peace.
The awards, hosted by Gwangju Metropolitan City, South Korea, celebrate outstanding video journalism that exemplifies courage, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to democracy, human rights, and freedom.
Among the prestigious recognitions is The World at a Crossroads (Grand Prize), awarded to a video journalist whose work has made a profound impact by capturing the global struggles for justice and truth. Another key recognition is the Award for News, presented to a journalist whose real-time reporting has significantly contributed to uncovering the truth behind critical events as they unfold.
The Award for Features and Documentaries celebrates in-depth storytelling and investigative journalism that highlights important issues surrounding human rights and democracy. It is important to note that theatrical films are not eligible for this category.
The Yu Young-gil Award acknowledges the exceptional bravery and dedication of young video journalists who report directly from the field, often at great personal risk.
In addition to these competitive categories, the May Gwangju Award stands as a special honour, reserved for works that focus on the city of Gwangju and its enduring legacy of democratic resistance.
To qualify for the awards, applicants’ entries must address themes related to democracy, human rights, or freedom. Applicants must be video journalists or team leaders who are video journalists.
Applications close on July 14, 2025.
