Access, an international human rights organization , in partnership with EngageMedia will hold the fourth edition of RightsCon conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Manila, in Philippines in March, 2015.
RightsCon Southeast Asia conference will bring together representatives of civil society organisations, engineers, activists, lawyers, companies, and governments on the subject of the internet and human rights. According to the organizers, the RightsCon conferences provide “opportunities for different communities to come together – activists, companies, thinkers, investors, engineers, and government officials – to discuss the tensions and opportunities at the intersection of human rights and the internet.”
The RightsCon Southeast Asia Conference’s agenda will focus on regional and global instruments that recognize the critical importance of issues of data protection, privacy, freedom of expression, infrastructure development, surveillance, and limiting risk in the ICT sector.
According to the hosts, RightsCon is taking place in Southeast Asia because “it’s a region where 40% of the world’s internet users are making incredible uses of emerging and online technoogies to develop their economies and champion human rights – while at the same time experiencing censorship, surveillance, and attacks on basic rights.”
The program for the 2015 RightsCon Southeast Asia is open to submissions from interested groups who will like to host session and thereby help to shape the agenda for the conference
RightsCon is encouraging submissions on the following themes:
- Protecting rights online in the age of surveillance
- Technology and infrastructure interdependence
- Digital rights and economic development
- Freedom of expression and Open Data
- Tech solutions for human rights challenges
- Limiting and measuring risk in the ICT sector
