The Hinzpeter Awards Organizing Committee (The HAOC) has announced the opening of applications for the Hinzpeter Awards 2023 which recognises and awards video reporters covering and reporting citizens’ noble fights for striving to protect democracy, human rights, and peace around the world.
There are three awards for competition categories (The World at A Crossroads Award, Award for News, and Award for Features) and an award for the non-competition category (the May Gwangju Award). A Trophy and 10,000 USD dollars will be given to each category’s winner.
Freelance video journalists or video journalists with affiliation to foreign or domestic media are eligible to apply. When applying as a team, the number of team members is limited to three and only the team leader should provide his/her details in the application, unless otherwise stated.
Established by the May 18 Foundation and the Korea Video Journalist Association in 2021, the Hinzpeter Awards began its third international public application on June 1. The Hinzpeter Awards honor and commemorate the journalism spirit of the German video reporter, Jürgen Hinzpeter, who revealed the May 18 Democratic Uprising to the world.
The late Jürgen Hinzpeter was a German video reporter who informed the world of the horrible scenes of the Massacre committed by the South Korean military dictatorship in May 1980. The Hintzpeter Awards is the first international press award in Korea that awards video reporters who cover the scenes of activism for human rights and justice.
The HAOC determines the application and award schedule. It completed preparations for screening the contest in May, started an international public application on June 1 to end on July 21. It will select winners in September, and hold the “2023 Hinzpeter Awards Ceremony in Seoul on November 8, 2023 at a ceremony to be held in Seoul in odd-numbered years and Gwangju in even-numbered years.
The May 18 Foundation and the Korea Video Journalist Association held a press event to explain the details of the application and release the official promotional videos on May 16, at the May 18 Foundation.
At the press conference, the HAOC released a video of the German Ambassador to Korea Michael Reiffenstuel’s congratulatory speech. Michael said that it is a great honor that the Awards name came from German journalist Jürgen Hinzpeter, He added that democracy does not work without free and independent information, while expressing deep empathy for the purpose and significance of the award to commemorate video reporters struggling for the truth.
