Media Impact Fund (MIF) has released a new report which presents data, trends and pressing issues facing the global media philanthropy and what funders can do moving forward.

Titled Global Media Philanthropy: What Funders Need to Know About Data, Trends and Pressing Issues Facing the Field, the report highlights the trends and gaps in global media philanthropy to help donors rethink and prioritize their giving.

It is the outcome of MIF research into the trends, challenges and opportunities for global media funding and draws on a variety of sources including data from the media data map through 2015, results from a survey of leading organizations engaged in funding media-related projects around the world, analyses of existing literature and reports, and insights offered by experts across a range of media funding issues.

The Report draws on research data from MIF media grants data map, results from a survey of leading organisations engaged in funding media-related projects around the world, analyses of existing literature, and insights offered by experts across a range of media funding issues.

It highlights data on available global media philanthropy and the need for better data collection; funder perspectives on their media grantmaking priorities and concerns; the need for greater security measures among media makers and their funders; the power of regional coordination and cooperation in promoting press freedom and open media; the challenges facing independent journalism in India and Africa; the unique funding structures for journalism in Europe; and much more.

Among other things, the report concludes that both funding and making media are now dangerous in new ways; that power dynamics are skewed in favor of American funders; that foundations can have an outsized influence on a country’s media system; the moment is ripe for organizing media funders in creative and effective new ways; that funders need to see the bigger picture; and that better data are needed.
