The Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), a South Africa-based non-profit organisation that acts in a watchdog role to promote ethical and fair journalism, is set to hold its 2025 edition of the Media Freedom Festival (MFF) in Johannesburg, South Africa, from October 14 to 16, 2025.

This year’s theme, “Resilient Media for a Resilient Democracy: Navigating the Future of Information”, will feature speeches and discussions on technological upheaval and economic sustainability, as well as topics such as journalist safety, dealing with disinformation, and the erosion of public trust.

The three-day festival will engage journalists, media practitioners, legal experts, and members of civil society on pertinent issues related to media freedom, the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism and hate speech, and the erosion of public trust. These discussions will be informed by the upcoming G20 summit in November, an awaited event around the world.

One highlight of the festival will be the Reporter Slam South Africa, where five South African and one German journalist will take to the stage to tell entertaining media stories. For further information, click here.

The annual Media Freedom Festival has become a landmark event in South Africa’s media landscape. Since its inception in 2018, MMA’s Media Freedom Festival (MFF) has provided a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy to address critical issues relating to media freedom and democracy. KAS Media Africa is thrilled to support this year’s Festival. This event is available in additional languages, with the venue to be communicated to registered participants.
