Media for Environment, Science, Health, and Agriculture (MESHA), a professional association of journalists and communicators, in partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network (SJN), is inviting applications from independent newsrooms across English-speaking African countries for the Climate Beacons Newsroom Initiative. The programme aims to strengthen climate solutions reporting by supporting journalists to produce evidence-based stories on how communities are responding to climate change.
The seven-month programme, which will run from August 2026 to March 2027, will support six independent newsrooms to produce evidence-based stories that highlight practical responses to climate change. The initiative encourages journalists to go beyond reporting climate problems by covering solutions that are making a difference in communities.
Participating newsrooms will receive training in solutions journalism, climate reporting, audience engagement, and impact tracking. They will also benefit from regular coaching from climate journalism experts and opportunities to collaborate with journalists across the region.
Each selected newsroom will be expected to publish at least eight in-depth climate solutions stories and report on audience engagement and the impact of the project.
According to Caroline Karobia, Africa Initiative Manager at the Solutions Journalism Network, the initiative aims to help newsrooms expand climate solutions journalism in a region facing increasing climate challenges by highlighting the impacts of climate change and the responses and innovations developed by affected communities.
Applications are open to established independent media organisations with experience or interest in climate reporting, including radio, print, television, digital, and online media platforms. Successful applicants can apply for funding of up to US$8,000,
